Onshore power for cruise ships from 2027 in Hamburg

2 September 2025
Standard takes effect three years before EU requirement

Onshore power for cruise ships will become standard in the Port Hamburg from 2027 and shipping will become climate-friendlier - three years earlier than required by the EU.  The required infrastructure is already available in the Altona and Steinwerder terminals. A new terminal in HafenCity will be linked up to the onshore power grid. Test operations will begin in  2026. Onshore power is also being developed for inland waterway vessels, seagoing vessels and cargo ships. Complete coverage with onshore power will be availbale from 2040, according to the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA).

Contracts sealed with cruise shipping companies

Emissions will be slashed during lay times and ships that are equipped and certified accordingly will be fed electricity from sustainable sources. The use of shore power is being expanded in collaboration with shipping companies and the Port of Hamburg's clients. HPA has already concluded contracts with several cruise shipping companies including AIDA Cruises, TUI Cruises and MSC Cruises
