"The arrival and departure of a cruise ship in the Port of Hamburg is always impressive. Last year, over 1.2 million passengers experienced that moment. Thus, the cruise industry is contributing significantly to value creation and employment around our port," said Dr Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics. The sector now accounts for an annual gross value added of EUR 420 million and 4,490 full-time jobs and is a key economic factor in Hamburg. Now, The industry is back on its pre-corona growth trajectory, which benefits the entire north German region, according to Simone Maraschi, Managing Director of Cruise Gate Hamburg GmbH.
A record 1,204,089 passengers embarked on cruises from Hamburg in 2023 up from 785,000 in 2022 thereby solidifying the city’s position as a major cruise port, a press release said Monday (April 22, 2024). A total of 51 different ships called in the Port of Hamburg 278 times, including eight first calls and 62 calls by river cruise ships and continuing the success of the strongest season in 2022 (280 calls).

New cruise terminal in HafenCity from 2025
Last year, Hamburg was named "Destination of the Year" at the Seatrade Cruise Awards in September marking another success. Plans are now being laid for ten new first calls including a premier by a Disney Cruise Line ship this year. A new cruise terminal is to be built in HafenCity by 2025. Meanwhile, onshore power supply is being expanded on a vast scale to supply all cruise terminals with onshore power in the future, Leonhard said.
