City on the waterfront: Europe's smartPORT is leading Hamburg into the future

State-of-the-art logistics

With the continued globalisation of goods movements, companies are facing ever-increasing competition and have to keep up with the constantly growing demands of customers. Without state-of-the-art logistics, this would be impossible. The Hamburg Metropolitan Region offers companies optimal conditions: thanks to its favourable geographical location and excellent accessibility by water, road, rail and air, Hamburg is an outstanding logistics hub for global trade and the number one logistics centre in Northern Europe.

At the centre of goods trade

Hamburg, the cosmopolitan city on the water, is the easternmost port on the North Sea and at the same time the ideal port for stakeholders in Eastern Europe. As a global hub between overseas destinations, Central and Eastern Europe and the entire Baltic region, Hamburg benefits from its central location at the very heart of Europe's logistics flows.

An intelligent system

The port of Hamburg thus plays a key role in supplying the European domestic market of around 500 million consumers. Sustainable efficiency is one of the port of Hamburg's visions for securing the future. As such, "smartPORT logistics" stands for intelligent solutions for the flow of traffic and goods in the port of Hamburg from both an economic and ecological perspective. The focus is on the three areas of infrastructure, traffic and goods flows.

Around 10,000 ship calls per year, 320 berths for seagoing vessels on a total of 43 kilometres of quay walls, four modern container terminals, more than 1,200 goods trains per week, around 50 specialised handling facilities for project shipments and bulk goods as well as around 12,000 logistics companies in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region: these are just some of the factors that make the port of Hamburg one of the most flexible and efficient universal ports in the world.
