Jan Hendrik Pietsch, Head of Sustainability at HHLA, remarked: “Thanks to the first successful test of the onshore power station at CTA, we have come closer to the goal of installing modern power stations at all three HHLA container terminals in Hamburg." CTA is now the third onshore power plant for container ships and is transitioning to regular operations. The power station at HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai is expected to be ready this year. Onshore power would then be available at all mega-ship berths in the Port of Hamburg from late 2025.
Hamburg Port Authority's (HPA) latest power station has passed the first of many practical tests in the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), a press release said Monday (April 14, 2025). The test involved charging the MSC Athens with onshore renewable energy during its lay time. The upcoming tests will focus on the regular supply of container ships with onshore energy.
Onshore power crucial for climate-friendly logistics
Making port future-proof and emission-free
Onshore electricity could provide customers with zero-emission power while at berth, thereby decarbonising another part of the supply chain. HHLA, MSC and HPA are gradually advancing the climate-friendly energy supply of container ships to achieve more sustainability in the maritime sector. The expansion of this infrastructure is a key part of Hamburg's transformation into a sustainable, low-emission port city, according to HHLA.
