Geospatial World's excellence award for 3D project planners to the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing

A 3D project planner, backed by the Ministry for Urban Development and Housing (BSW), won an excellence award Friday (April 25, 2025) in the "Spatial Computing and Digital Twin Enterprise" category at the Geospatial World Forum in Madrid. Susanne Metz, Head of Regional Planning and Urban Development at BSW, and Nora Reinecke, Overall Project Manager Connected Urban Twins in the Senate Chancellery, accepted the prestigious award on Hamburg's behalf.

Excellent urban planning and digital transformation

"We are proud that the '3D Projektplaner' has been honoured as an excellent example of innovative urban planning and digital transformation. This award recognises the City of Hamburg's commitment and expertise in the development of modern technologies and underlines their importance for sustainable and transparent urban development," said Metz. Urban development ideas can be sketched as a digital model with the 3D planner

The interaction of construction projects with the urban environment can also be better assessed by overlaying geodata such as noise maps or monument mapping. The 3D project planner is based on the open source tool, Masterportal, which is now used jointly by 46 cities, municipalities and public administrations worldwide.

3D planner speeds up planning and approval

The 3D project planner, which is part of the Connected Urban Twins project, eases the work of public authorities and councils, according to Jan Pörksen, State Councillor and Head of the Senate Chancellery. The 3D planner is an exemplary innovation that is in line with the strategies of the digital twin and boosts "smarter, more transparent urban development", according to the Geospatial World Forum. The consistent introduction of digital applications like the 3D project planner accelerates planning and approval procedures, according to Karen Pein, Senator for Urban Development and Housing. "This is one of the senate's main digitalisation strategy goals."
