A delighted Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science and Research, commented: "This is a great success as a scientific centre and for strengthening biodiversity research in Hamburg. The new LIB combines excellent research, a comprehensive collection and exciting exhibitions under one roof. This allows us to make important research areas tangible for visitors to the museum and to link them up to topics such as climate change or infection research. Research and knowledge transfer come together here in a forward-looking way."
An urban steering group has selected construction site 51 in HafenCity as the location of the new Leibniz Research Museum of Natural History (LIB), a press release said Tuesday (November 29, 2022). The museum should boost research and analysis into biodiversity and change amid increasing threats to species and habitats and the genetic diversity of animal and plant species. More knowledge is needed to safeguard habitats and to restore damaged ecosystems.
New natural history museum for research and knowledge transfer
Central spacious building
The new museum will be built on the banks of the Magdeburger Hafen near HafenCity University and the International Maritime Museum Hamburg. The location has best met criteria such as central inner-city location, size and start of construction. The HIS Institute for Higher Education Development e. V. is tasked with determining the space requirements on behalf of the Ministry for Science, Research, Equality and Districts. This will form the basis of the architectural tender next spring. Work on the contents of the exhibition and mediation will continue in the meantime.
