"The Museum of Hamburg History is one of the largest institutions of urban history in Europe. It preserves special museum objects, researches their contexts and makes Hamburg's historical development tangible," said Dr Peter Tschentscher, Mayor of Hamburg. "The museum is closely linked to life in Hamburg and is essential to the city's memory," Dr Carsten Brosda, Senator of Culture and Media, added.
Special exhibitions to mark anniversary - plans to fully renovate museum and redesign permanent exhibition
A large festival and several special exhibitions at the Museum of Hamburg History will open on August 28, 2022 to mark its centenary celebrations. Visitors do not have to pay admission fees and can look forward to guided tours and a glimpse behind the scenes. The special exhibitions "Inspiration History - 100 Positions on 100 Years" will open on September 14 through November 20, 2022, as well as the "EINE STADT WIRD BUNT" (literally: A City goes Colorful) from November 2, 2022. The museum first opened its doors on August 13, 1922 and now has a collection of 530,000 objects. Plans are also being laid to fully renovate the museum by 2024 at a cost of EUR 36 million provided by the City of Hamburg and the German government.

The Society for Hamburg History was founded in 1839 and preserved important "pictures, works of art, documents and everyday objects". The outstanding brick edifice on Holstenwall was designed by architect Fritz Schumacher and opened in 1922. The renovations should help preserve its status as a listed building and see the permanent exhibition redesigned.
