"The shell of immunity and inflammation research and the closely-related infection research is now in place. Scientists here will soon be transferring their findings from biomedical basic and clinical-translational research into medical care for our patients as quickly as possible," said Prof. Dr. Blanche Schwappach-Pignataro, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. Interdisciplinary co-operation and proximity to patients should advance medicine. That will boost both the therapy of infectious diseases and understanding the immune system's role in many other diseases e.g., cancer or autoimmune diseases, according to Prof. Dr. Martin Aepfelbacher, Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene.
Latest campus to focus on infectious diseases and immunology
The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) has held a topping-out ceremony to mark the near completion of its Campus Research II and the Hamburg Center for Translational Immunology (HCTI) as part of its Future Plan 2050. HCTI comes at a cost of EUR 91 million of which the German government is footing around EUR 22.7 million. Around 150 laboratory units are due for completion by late 2023 and will offer ideal conditions for biomedical and applied immunity, infection and inflammation research.

More collaboration
The new building is ideal for interdisciplinary work. Two wings will be connected with a wing in the middle; about 240 office workplaces and about 360 laboratory workplaces will be spread out over six floors. Seminar and event spaces, meeting rooms and a common room give researchers an opportunity to confer with each other.
