Application-orientated technology research boosting Hamburg’s innovative power
The Deutsche Elektronen-Synchroton (DESY) has won the first ever "Hamburg 2040 Award", a press release said Thursday (July 7, 2022). The prize honours R&D at DESY into innovative technologies, which are relevant to society and the successful transfer of science, according to the Chamber of Commerce. DESY, which is part of the Helmholtz Association, attracts more than 3,000 researchers from all over the world to Hamburg every year.

"The 'Hamburg 2040' award is a great incentive to continue on our path to link up science and industry even better," said Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors. Established in 2020, the annual award is part of the Chamber of Commerce's "Hamburg 2040" strategy to shape the future of the city. Companies and institutions are honoured for groundbreaking innovations and their transfer to the economy. The world's largest X-ray laser XFEL, which went into operation in 2017, is opening up all kinds of new research approaches in nanotechnology and materials management.
