Elbkulturfonds selects projects for funding in 2026

1 August 2025
€500,000 for six art projects

Six art projects will receive grants totalling €500,000 next year following a decision by the jury of the Elbkulturfonds. The projects include an anti-fascist pop opera in a public space and three-night watchwomen who will guide the audience through an evening of light and darkness. Projects by freelance artists and groups in Hamburg that address socially important issues will also be funded. The Elbkulturfonds also funds projects in public spaces that encourage people to take part in urban life. Commenting on the jury’s choice of recipients, Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media, said: “It is encouraging and a pleasure to see how the submitted projects creatively translate the signs of the times into art, reflecting the present and re-evaluating the past.”

Funded  projects:

1. €50,000 for "Beyond Borders: Love and Literature"

The author, Simoné Goldschmidt-Lechter, is keen on bringing writers of all genres together. Events in independent bookshops and other venues should set an example of solidarity against the rise of the far right.

2. €59,500 for "Reference library on art in public spaces in Hamburg and beyond" -

This project, created by artist Thiseas Efstathopoulos and the para-education collective, aims to develop a digital mediation tool that presents the history of public art in urban spaces in an accessible and inclusive manner.

3. €66,000 for "Popaganda"

The anti-fascist pop opera, Popaganda by Clara Pazzini, features a mix of concert, political event and dance performance and will tour venues in Hamburg.

4. €88,000 "Night Shifts (AT)"

Three "night watchwomen" guide the audience through an evening of performance art involving light and shadow. This is the concept behind Nights Shifts by Lisa Alice Klosterkötter and KlosterkötterGrafGBR. Various places in Hamburg such as St. Pauli Church, Volkspark Altona and a container in the port will come to life with performances, readings and concerts.

5. €96,500 for "Climate currents - cities, countries, rivers!"

Caio Jacques Piaszek's project brings the climate to life for children through art and research projects. Various events raise participants' artistic awareness of the climate crisis and associated changes, and aims to build a self-empowered children's network.

6. €140,000 "(Not A) Common Ground:"

Liz Rech has received the highest grant for a performance about Hamburg's colonial past. The event focuses on the departure of the so-called 'Schutztruppen' from Baakenhafen. These troops later committed genocide against the Herero and Nama in present-day Namibia (then known as German South West Africa) under the command of the notorious Lothar von Trotha. The performance will take place in early summer 2026 as part of the "Counter Monuments" series.
