Hamburg funding creative ideas for city centre

4 December 2024
22 pioneering ideas selected - EUR 640,000 for creative pilot projects

The Ministry for Urban Development and Housing has earmarked EUR 640,000 in funds for 22 pilot projects to revive downtown Hamburg and make public spaces more attractive and sustainable. The projects will be carried out by Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft before autumn 2025.

Creative approaches for innovative meeting spaces

"We will see very different projects in 2025, which is a wonderful step for the city centre towards more diverse uses and community development," said Elke Pahl-Weber, City Centre Co-ordinator. The funded projects will lead to creative spaces that revive the city centre and boost social participation, cultural diversity and social interaction. Several projects will target children and youths who can play an active role in shaping their city. "The promising approaches range from temporary playgrounds and light installations to creative art performances and dance events," said Karen Pein, Senator for Urban Development and Housing.

New impetus for city centre

The pilot projects are part of the "Hidden Potentials - Community Development of Diversity of Use for a Vibrant and Resilient Hamburg City Centre" funding scheme. Smaller projects can apply for up to EUR 2,500 in funds. Decisions on applications are usually made within two weeks. In addition to prototypes such as the Future Fashion Lab, funding new pilot projects should add momentum to developing downtown Hamburg.
