“We need more talks and understanding in an increasingly diverse society. Intercultural projects are important because artistic projects bring people together and spark interest in other cultures," said Carsten Brosda, Senator for Culture and Media. The ministry’s funding will benefit Hamburg-based international artists and intercultural initiatives. A total of EUR 100,000 and an additional EUR 8,000 are available for interdisciplinary projects by e.g., the Interkulturelle Denkfabrik, Zwischenräume, Salut Delux and Fluxus2. Around EUR 405,000 from the culture and tourism tax will go towards outstanding intercultural festivals such as Fluctoplasma, the "Krass Kultur Crash" festival in Kampnagel, the "Altonale/Stamp" festival and the German Turkish Theatre Bridge Festival at the Mut Theatre.
The Ministry of Culture and Media has earmarked more than EUR 500,000 in funds for 17 intercultural projects this year, a press release said Tuesday (January 28, 2025). A culture and tourism tax will be levied to fund four festivals and the "In Szene" scheme which helps artists carry out projects in co-operation with a cultural institution.
More talks and understanding
Greater participation in artistic and civic life
The diversity of applications provides insight into Hamburg's increasingly diverse urban society, the jury said. "This diverse urban society is not yet sufficiently represented in the (state-funded) cultural institutions. Given this backdrop, it is important to support these projects, to raise their visibility and enable everyone to participate in artistic and civic life. The Intro grant scheme benefits international artists and helps them to carry out their projects in cooperation with a cultural institution. Pariticipants can also undergo further education and training. The "Elbkulturfonds" is also open to independent artists.
