Hamburg now attracting increasing number of tomorrow's scientists

A record of over 120,000 students including 76,000 at state unversities, were enrolled at universities across Hamburg in the 2024/2025 winter term, according to preliminary statistics. The number of students and first-year students has risen by 1.8 per cent and 4.8 per cent respectively over the previous year, a press release said Tuesday (April 15, 2025).

Hamburg's universities are growing

"Hamburg's universities are growing contrary to the national trend. We have set a new record with 121,397 students," said a delighted Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality. Around 76,055 people - a  rise of 2.2 per cent over the same period last year - are studying at state universities  in Hamburg. The number of first-year students has risen by 2.7 per cent to 9,921. A rising number of students are enrolling in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects and teacher training courses. More international students than ever are arriving in Hamburg. "The City of Hamburg is offering tomorrow's specialists in climate and life research, infection research, art and technology top opportunities," said Fegebank.
