Under the ship-to-ship method, fuel is fed from a bunker ship to another ship. So far, bunkering has been done only in the cruise terminal in Steinwerder in the Port of Hamburg. Cruise ships have refueled with LNG there since 2019 and with methanol since 2024.
Waltershof now "bunker-ready" for LNG and methanol
The Port of Hamburg is expanding its supply infrastructure for alternative fuels, a press release said Thursday (August 28, 2025). Container ships can now refuel with liquefied natural gas (LNG) and methanol in the Burchardkai and Predöhlkai terminals near the Port of Waltershof using the ship-to-ship method.

Port's climate-neutral future
The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) is advancing the decarbonisation of shipping and bolstering the Port of Hamburg as a sustainable energy hub at the same time. Independent companies are responsible for bunkering. More bunkering options e.g., for ammonia are to be created by 2030, HPA said. Ships calling in the port should then be able to bunker all available alternative fuels.
