Climate change, the repercussions of the pandemic, global wars and changes in global trade are putting even more pressure on the shipping industry to transform. "The German government, federal states and industry must join forces to counteract this pressure for change. The millions of euros in modernisation funding are an important step towards that goal," said Patrick Schnieder, Germany's Minister for Transport. A modern "shipping industry with appropriate infrastructure is the backbone of Germany as an economic hub", he added. Hamburg has recently finalised plans to expand the Port of Hamburg to the west to make it climate-friendlier and up-to-date.

Germany's ports to become more modern, competitive and climate-friendlier
The German government has earmarked €400 million in funds to make ports and shipping climate-friendlier over the next four years, a press release said Thursday (July 3, 2025). The so-called "modernisation millions" stem from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) and should help implement the National Port Strategy and the National Action Plan for Climate-Friendly Shipping. The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of sea and inland ports and to develop climate protection targets for shipping. The funds will be invested in alternative fuels, climate-neutral shipping corridors, building onshore power plants and green energy bunkers and the modal shift to waterways.
