Hamburg and Lower Saxony to develop sustainable mobility with southern metropolitan region

Hamburg and Lower Saxony have joined forces with the districts of Harburg, Lüneburg and Stade to form the "Mobility Alliance for the Southern Elbe Region", which is home to 25,000 companies with 312,000 jobs. The five-year collaboration should create forward-looking, sustainable mobility across federal states and expand the infrastructure.

Maintaining region's economic success

"Our joint goal is to overhaul key infrastructure and prepare it for the future, while at the same time meeting the growing demand for modern, sustainable mobility with attractive public transport," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. Commuter traffic, growing mobility needs, rail bottlenecks and an expanded cycling infrastructure are just some of the issues facing the alliance. "We want to offer people improved commutes, provide companies with reliable infrastructure and strengthen the business location as a whole. We are joining forces to actively shape the mobility of the future, be it road and rail transport, high-speed cycle paths or innovative mobility services," said Olaf Lies, Lower Saxony's Minister for Economics, Transport, Building and Digitalisation.

Strong partnership for mobility

Plans are being laid to increase the number of seats on the S6 rapid train, the frequency of  services and to digitise the route. This is in addition to expanding the Hamburg rail hub, Park+Ride facilities, switch points, bike stations in the city and the cycling infrastructure. The Deutschlandticket, HVV Hop's on-demand services and new express bus routes in the south of Hamburg are some of the key steps taken towards mobility in future. Companies in the South Elbe region will benefit from the expertise of private companies and trade associations. Firms will also be helped with corporate mobility management. "The mobility alliance for the South Elbe region creates a strong partnership that boosts sustainable, modern and efficient transport," Lies said.  A steering committee will discuss initial measures and projects soon.
