Real-world labs conference highlights sustainable transport

Four real-world laboratories in Hamburg, Neumunster and the districts of Pinneberg, Stade, Harburg, Luneburg and Cuxhaven recently presented their transport solutions for companies, commercial centres, schools and rural areas at their closing conference, a press release said Tuesday (September 10, 2024). The conference was held as part of the Hamburg Metropolitan Region's "Mobility Management" project to boost sustainable transport.

Operational mobility management

The labs had worked with Feldbinder, a manufacturer of semi-trailers and freight wagons, Viebrockhaus, which builds brick houses, and the city of Neumunster, among others, to come up with solutions for corporate mobility. The laboratories recommended bicycle transport and improved communication of mobility offers. Feldbinder, for instance, intends setting up a page about transport on its intranet and appointing a mobility officer. Viebrockhaus, on the other hand, wants to let employees use its e-charging stations free of charge. The logistics company, Dachser SE, and the local government in Neumunster came up with ideas such as more bicycle parking facilities, a bike-sharing system and increased co-operation with health managers in companies.

Transport in Hamburg-Altona

Altona is the third largest commercial centre in Hamburg with around 1,500 businesses. The district now aims to improve transport for employees, deliveries and customers especially on the last two kilometres. To this end, eight companies have joined forces in the "Unternehmen am Volkspark e.V." association and have launched targeted measures. Hamburger Hochbahn has also announced plans to set up an HVV switch point in the southern part of Schnackenburgallee.

Mobility in rural areas and school runs

Several measures focused on shared taxis, which are often the only regular means of public transport in rural areas. Plans foresee adding four urban services to the shared call taxi network. More stops were added in the south and standard fares levied. Around 19 measures have been developed, some of which have already been implemented, while others will be included in the next local plan. Parent taxis are a huge problem for schools in rural regions. The real-lab lab in Pinneberg surveyed parents and pupils in Hamburg-Altona about the issue. As a result, targeted measures and model solutions were developed for 16 educational establishments at pilot locations across the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Hopes are now high that these can be adapted by other towns with similar problems. The results of the “Mobility Management Project” will be published on the Hamburg Metropolitan Region's website in late September.
