The city has created the forward-looking Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and Hamburg is now one of eleven centres of excellence with diverse universities and outstanding non-universities. "Top-class scientists are working on the pressing issues of our time and innovations of the future – from particle accelerators, AI media research, climate research, data science, sustainable transport to quantum computing and medicine,” she stressed.
The German Association of University Professors and Lecturers (DHV) has ranked Katharina Fegebank, Hamburg's Senator for Science, Research and Equality "Science Minister of the Year (2024)" after topping the ranking in 2020 and 2023. Her achievements in higher education and science policy were rated best, a press release said Monday (February 17, 2025). Second place went to Professor Dr Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection in Saxony-Anhalt followed by Brandenburg's Dr Manja Schüle, Minister for Science, Research and Culture in third place.

Survey on suitability for office
More than 33,500 members of the association were surveyed online about the suitability of federal and state ministers for their office. The Centre for Evaluation and Methods at the University of Bonn had managed the ranking. The results are available online.
