Cobe Copenhagen wins contest for urban and open space in Science City Bahrenfeld

Danish architects Cobe Copenhagen have secured a tender to develop urban, open spaces in the "Quartiere am Volkspark", a part of Science City Bahrenfeld. Construction is due to begin in 2027/2028, a press release said Tuesday (September 10, 2024). Six teams had fine-tuned their ideas for the area for as part of competitive talks begun in October 2023. Hopes are now high that cutting-edge research, university education and new companies can go hand in hand in a new, vibrant residential area.

Research, teaching, working and living

"Now that the competition has ended, this pioneering project, which is unique in Europe, can become reality. Science can become a catalyst of urban development through research, teaching, working and living there," said Katharina Fegebank, Deputy Mayor of Hamburg. Cobe Copenhagen has developed a “coherent overall concept”, she added. "We are focussing on a pioneering research and science landscape, a healthy social mix and buildings surrounded and interwoven with a green network. This will connect Bahrenfeld's main parks and become green, pulsating corridors in Science City," said Karoline Liedtke-Sørensen, Head of Landscape at Cobe. The design puts Hamburg's urban development strategy into effect in Volkspark, according to Franz Josef Hönig, Chief Planning Officer. The strategy foresees dense, mixed-use spaces and a wide range of housing options, and will also make for a new science centre in Hamburg.

The project will transform a 55-hectare site into three distinct districts whose identities will be shaped by the existing landscape. Around 3,800 flats are to built as well as leisure and sports facilities, social services, schools and a university campus. The plans also foresee a new underground metro station and a sustainable transport hub. A brand new urban space will be created next to Volkspark Altona. "We are developing a new part of Hamburg with the locals," said Karen Pein, Senator for Urban Development and Housing. Cobe's design will form the basis of planning, which is due for completion in late 2026. Construction is due to begin in 2027/2028.
