"As a public meeting point and meeting place, DESYUM will strengthen our talks with society and become a new, lively landmark on our campus," said Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors. The visitor centre will bring DESY's research topics closer interactively and will also function as a public meeting place for employees. This milestone is an "outstanding calling card for Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld", said Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality.
The German Electron Synchrotron’s (DESY) celebrated Monday (January 22) the topping out of its new visitor centre or the so-called DESYUM in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. The "first deliberately sustainable building" on the campus is due to open in 2025 and will feature an auditorium, conference rooms, offices and a roof terrace.

DESYUM to be heated with waste heat from particle accelerators
Sustainability standards were taken into account during construction and some of the techniques used saved around 30 per cent of the concrete in load-bearing parts of the building, DESY said. The façade was made from recycled and recyclable aluminum and the green terrace on the roof will store rainwater. Plans are being laid to heat the building with waste heat from DESY's particle accelerators.
