Hyperloop project gives glimpses of port in future

HyperloopTT and HHLA to present HyperPort at ITS World Congress

The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA)  and the U.S. research and development company, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), will give virtual reality glimpses of revolutionary transport in the port of the future at the upcoming ITS World Congress in Hamburg, a press release said Tuesday (July 6, 2021).

HyperPort to put freight transport on a new level

Gerlinde John, Project Manager HyperPort at HHLA, remarked: "The Hyperloop technology is suitable for taking the transport of goods to a new level. We are developing an alternative solution using the HyperPort concept to existing transport systems for goods transport of the future in a fast-growing global market.” Capsules moving on air cushions in a largely airless tube can travel e.g., the Hamburg-Berlin route in just 20 minutes without traffic or environmental influences.

Hyperloop technology to revolutionize mobility

HyperloopTT and HHLA began collaborating in late 2018 and first developed a design study based on their technical concept for the HyperPort the technology of which is based on the HyperloopTT passenger systems. Up to 2,800 containers a day are transported over hundreds of kilometres at the speed of an airplane in a closed operating environment. The rival U.S. company, Virgin Hyperloop, conducted the first test runs with passengers in late 2020.

Andres De Leon, CEO of HyperloopTT, pointed out: "Using the same underlying technology as our passenger systems, the HyperPort can future-proof supply chains and simultaneously relieve the burden on port regions. Our work with world-leading firms to move this technology forward is a significant revenue opportunity for port operators all around the world.”  The goal is to increase the capacity and efficiency of container terminals while reducing environmental impacts and congestion at ports worldwide. The concept will be presented using a virtual reality demonstrator during the ITS World Congress in Hamburg from October 11-15, 2021. A YouTube video, published by HHLA, offers a preview of the system.
