"Hydrogen is one of the keys to a climate-neutral future. We at HHLA are committed to actively shaping this transformation," said Annette Walter, CFO, HHLA. Liquid hydrogen plays a key role therein as it can be transported independently of pipelines, which is crucial for mobility, logistics, aviation, and especially SMEs. Under the plan, liquid hydrogen would arrive in the port and be transported onwards to European countries making Hamburg a hydrogen hub. The companies involved are now mulling onward transport by road and rail. More companies and institutions are to be recruited to form a consortium along the entire liquid hydrogen value chain.
Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA), Daimler Truck AG (Daimler Truck) and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the global “Hydrogen Technology World Expo” in Hamburg, a press release said Wednesday (October 22, 2025). The partnership aims to develop a reliable and cost-effective supply chain for green liquid hydrogen via the Port of Hamburg to the European hinterland.
Hamburg as a liquid hydrogen hub
Consolidated expertise for climate-neutral energy
The "Memorandum of Understanding" highlights the strategic importance of liquid hydrogen for the energy transition and transforming European industry, HHLA said. The partnership is an important step towards making liquid hydrogen more widely available and advancing decarbonsiation together. As part of the "Clean Ports & Logistics" cluster, the company is working on the use of fuel cells in handling equipment and heavy goods transport. Kawasaki Heavy Industries provides technology for hydrogen infrastructure, while Daimler Truck focuses on CO₂-neutral drive systems. Earlier this year, HHLA formed a partnership with Oman to increase European imports of hydrogen. The new partnership with Daimler Truck and Kawasaki Heavy Industries complements previous international activities and underlines Hamburg's goal of becoming a green hydrogen hub.
