Future of clean energy at centre of Hydrogen Technology World Expo

Entire value chain to meet at leading trade fair in Hamburg (October 21-23)

The Hydrogen Technology World Expo (HTWE) opens its doors from October 21- 25, 2025 in Hamburg. All the movers and shakers in the industry are expected at the leading hydrogen trade fair and to point the way forward. Emphasis is on developing low-carbon hydrogen production, storage and infrastructure. The Renewable Energy Hamburg Cluster (EEHH) is hosting a joint stand with 16 exhibitors.

Trade fair to advance hydrogen revolution

Stakeholders in politics, industry and finance will discuss strategies, projects and partnerships that are advancing the hydrogen transition during the Hydrogen Leadership Summit. More than 300 experts will present their latest findings on clean hydrogen production, advanced storage solutions, infrastructure expansion and producing next-generation fuel cells. Around 1,000 exhibitors will showcase innovative materials, technology and testing tools.

Six industry-orientated conference tracks will cover the entire hydrogen value chain. Topics on the agenda include low-carbon hydrogen routes, hydrogen systems, infrastructure, the latest developments in fuel cell technology, the potential of hydrogen-based fuels such as e-fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and ammonia, as well as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) guidelines and capture technologies. Delegates will have plenty of opportunities to network with sponsors, exhibitors and innovators.

Hydrogen key to climate neutrality

Speaking during an October press conference in the run-up to the fair, Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and Innovation, remarked: "As an industrial, port city, we in Hamburg believe that hydrogen is key to becoming climate-neutral." A recent referendum has mandated that Hamburg become climate-neutral by 2040. Jan Rispens, Managing Director of EEHH, pointed to two ongoing projects in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region to ramp up the hydrogen economy and to decarbonise industry and the port.

The decommissioned Moorburg coal-fired power plant is being converted into the "Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub" (HGHH). The resulting electrolyser is set to start producing commercial hydrogen in 2027. The HH-WIN hydrogen industrial network is due go into operation in the same year. The two hydrogen projects will supply hydrogen to local industry near the port. A link to the HH-WIN network and the European transmission system will enable the local hydrogen sector to source green energy from other regions. A feed-in ship will import locally produced and imported hydrogen.

Hydrogen economy as a marathon

"The hydrogen economy is not a sprint; it's a marathon. We're talking about a transformation that will take two decades," said Rispens. A survey by the Fraunhofer CML has found that Hamburg could provide 10 to 18 per cent of Germany's total demand by 2045 - the target year for achieving greenhouse gas neutrality - through production and seaborne imports.
