Impossible Founders boosts startups at the interface between science and business - especially in green technologies, new materials, artificial intelligence and data science. Initiated by Michael Otto Foundation and the Joachim Herz Foundation, the non-profit organisation works closely with the University of Hamburg, the Hamburg University of Technology and the DESY research centre.
The City of Hamburg has secured over €50 million in funds for deep-tech startups after the recently-founded Startup Factory "Impossible Founders" received €10 million from the German Ministry of Economics and Energy, a press release said Thursday (July 10, 2025) . This will be supplemented by over €40 million from Hamburg-based companies and foundations. The Startup Factory in the Speicherstadt digital hub aims to get more science-based spin-offs off the ground. The factory will be officially launched on November 1, 2025. The ministry is funding ten EXIST Startup Factories to establish more deep-tech startups in Germany.

Impossible Founders - "milestone for Hamburg"
"Impossible Founders has the potential to become a beacon in Hamburg's innovation ecosystem," said Norbert Aust, President of the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg. "The project proves impressively hat Hamburg as a centre of science offers excellent conditions for more researchers to become successful founders." In the long term, Impossible Founders should help establish Hamburg as a leading centre of deep-tech innovations. The funding is thus a milestone in terms of Hamburg's strategy, said Aust. The Ministry for Economics and Energy (BMWE) is funding ten EXIST Startup Factories to establish more deep-tech startups in Germany.
