University Hospital becomes 23rd member of network

The University Hospital Eppendorf (UKE) has joined the  "Pier Plus" research network (Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research PLUS),  a press release said Tuesday (June 17, 2025). The membership should boost co-operation between universities and non-university research institutions in six research profiles and four joint fields of action across the Hamburg Metropolitan Region. Founded in 2019, the network now has 23 members including UKE, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, DESY and Fraunhofer Institutes.

Reinforcing existing partnership

Members of UKE have already taken part in various projects as part of the PIER Health and Infection profile, which bundles research into infectious diseases, their development, prevention and treatment, according to Christian Gerloff, Medical Director of UKE. They also made significant contributions to the PIER Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld profile. The other  profiles are PIER Climate and Coast, PIER Conflict, Cooperation and Security, PIER New Materials, PIER Climate-Friendly Mobility.

Topic-specific and cross-thematic collaboration

"We want to create a collaborative and innovative environment in Hamburg as a science location that not only enables excellent research, but also addresses the most pressing challenges of our time. I am therefore all the more pleased to welcome the UKE as a partner in PIER PLUS,” said Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, President of the University of Hamburg. Co-operative and interdisciplinary collaboration are more important than ever in a constantly changing university and research landscape, he added.

The PIER PLUS profiles are supplemented by four common fields of action: computing and data science, innovation and transfer, science communication and promoting scientists in an early career phase.
