"Based on our successful Hamburg DiPlan application, we are working with the German government on a planning and approval platform for use all over Germany," said Monika Thomas, State Councillor. The AI platform will map all the approval procedures relating to the core hydrogen network digitally and simplify procedures. This should accelerate its development nationwide. The platform will be continuously developed to cover other applications and administrative procedures.
The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing is working on an AI-supported platform to speed up planning and approval procedures and set up a nationwide hydrogen network. Funded by the German government's Climate and Transformation Fund, the platform is among the top digitalisation goals and is due to be launched in April 2025. The "Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network"(HH-WIN) will be integrated into this hydrogen network.
AI platform model for Germany
New impetus from Hamburg
The developments in Hamburg shows how innovative governance can advance hydrogen infrastructure. The overall goal is to create an ecosystem that fosters co-operation between local, state and federal authorities. Stephan Wenzel, Parliamentary State Secretary in the German Ministry of Economics and Technology, said: "The core hydrogen network is the starting point for new infrastructure and one of the most important parts of the energy transition. The rapid and efficient realisation of the network is a prerequisite for ramping up a successful hydrogen economic sector." In addition to digitalisation, the city is also focusing on building the physical infrastructure and will extend the hydrogen pipelines in the Port of Hamburg to 60 kilometres by 2032.
