"We are bringing diversity to big OMR stages"

Isabelle Gardt, Managing Director and OMR's Head of Marketing, highlights importance of female leadership, diversity and equality

If you look at the world and the development of our values presently, you might think that these are bad times for diversity, equality and female leadership. Right now, it is important to set an example from a cosmopolitan and tolerant city like Hamburg. In short, it's about justice. My vision is of equal rights in the working world and a 50:50 gender balance in the management levels of the economy. I would like to use the attention and reach of OMR to achieve this goal.

"We have to do something"

Only four out of 40 students in my computer science degree course were women. Then, it  dawned on me that we had to do something about it. Studies such as the one conducted by the Allbright Foundation highlight the necessity. The  proportion of women on management boards and supervisory boards in listed companies is growing, but in 2023, almost 83 per cent of board members were still men.

So, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Progress is gradually being made although in view of the current global situation, I think we are moving backwards. That prompted me to launch the 5050 initiative at OMR in 2018. The following year, our issues were presented at OMR Festival for the first time - and we eventually had our own stage. Then,  everything revolved around a fairer working world for a full day. Since then, we have held the annual Founders' Pitch to boost networking between female founders and investors.

"We think bigger"

For the past three years, the 5050 Stage has been the focal point of the OMR Festival, where we have discussed diversity and equality with an expert audience. There will not be a 5050 Stage at this year's OMR Festival, which is underway from May 6-7, 2025. We are instead thinking bigger. Keynotes, panels and interviews on diversity, equality and inclusion will be held on the festival's main stages in front of 5,000 delegates. We see OMR's role as a knowledge platform to identify, curate and actively shape trends and developments. Diversity and inclusion are no longer niche issues, but play a role in society. Thus, they are important for our entire industry and the digital economy and belong on the big stages. This is a milestone for OMR and a step in the right direction.

"Deadline for applications on March 14

I'm a big fan of quick wins, but I'm also aware that this journey is going to be more of a marathon than a sprint. We want to reach as many people as possible and use our network to provide access to insights, experts, best cases and learnings on these topics. We discuss all the latest developments, news and trends in our newsletter "Re: 5050". Of course, I hope to live to see a time when we no longer need to talk about it because we have long since reached our goal. The deadline for startups to apply to pitch their business models is on March 14, 2025. This fourth OMR 5050 initiative invites 5050 impact startups, whose founders are all women or predominantly female founding teams, to take part in the Founders Pitch 2025.

OMR Festival

The OMR Festival is one of Europe’s biggest online marketing and digital events. It features all kinds of conferences, masterclasses, side events and exhibitions. OMR launched the exhibition in 2015, bringing around 1,000 exhibitors and partners from the digital business together with an expert audience.
