"By operating driverless shuttles in downtown Hamburg, we are taking another key step towards the public transport of the future. Autonomous ride-sharing is the missing link between buses and trains and people's individual mobility needs," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. MOIA will start testing the all-electric, driverless Volkswagen ID.Buzz AD and Holon models, initially with safety drivers on a 37-square-kilometre area. Up to 20 autonomous vehicles will be on the road for the duration of the project and can be booked on the HVV Switch and MOIA apps.
Tests of driverless vehicles will begin near the Stadtpark, the Elbe River and from Schlump to Wandsbek as part of the ALIKE project in mid-2025, a press release said Friday (November 8, 2024). A survey on the acceptance of autonomous driving was launched under the supervision of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
Driverless shuttles for public transport
Hamburg is a European pioneer for mobility
Ride-sharing will become a new pillar of public transport in Germany and an attractive alternative to the car. "Hamburg is a pioneering model mobility region in Germany and Europe," Tjarks stressed. The "ALIKE" project pools the expertise of business and research partners to come up with a sustainable mobility transition. The consortium, led by Hamburger Hochbahn, includes MOIA, Holon, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, KIT and the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition in Hamburg. The German government is providing EUR 26 million for the three-year project.
Hamburg to host UITP 2025
As part of the mobility transition., the City of Hamburg is expanding public transport and making cycling more attractive in a bid to reduce the number of cars on roads. The metro is being overhauled and expanded, and the bus fleet is going electric. The city is also exploring how to transform mobility for tomorrow's world and is now gearing up to host the UITP flagship mobility congress in both 2025 and 2027. This comes after the city successfully hosted the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress in 2021 marking a milestone in the mobility transition.
