"More than 330,000 new Germany ticket customers used to make nearly one in four journeys by car," said Anna-Theresa Korbutt, Managing Director of HVV. The launch of the nationwide ticket has led to more passengers than in the record pre-pandemic year 2019, making the "Deutschlandticket a real game changer", Korbut stressed. This success story should continue and more passengers be attracted to Hamburg's public transport services this year, said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition.
Increase driven by lifting of pandemic measures and launch of Germany Ticket nationwide
Passenger numbers on Hamburg's public transport (HVV) increased by 15 per cent in 2023 over 2022 due to the lifting of coronavirus measures and concessions, according to the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition (BVM) and the Hamburg Transport Association. Figures on expanding and upgrading footpaths and cycle paths reached a record high.
End of pandemic and "Germany Ticket" boost demand
More pedestrian and cycle paths
Apart from public transport, walking and cycling also promote sustainable mobility in Hamburg. A total of 57 kilometres of cycle paths were built or upgraded in 2023. Two-thirds consisted of cycle paths and cycle lanes separated from motor vehicle traffic. Another 39 per cent (93 kilometres) more footpaths were built or upgraded in 2023 over 2022.
