“Despite the pandemic, both generally good demand for export goods and stable imports ensured a positive trend. The year 2022 also started well,” said Alexander Till, head of HHM - Port of Hamburg Marketing’s Representative Office for Austria in Vienna, adding: “Hamburg has remained the most important port for Austria. In recent decades, its market share has constantly been between 40 and 50 per cent.”
Container throughput between Austria and the Port of Hamburg set a record in 2021 with an increase of 6.5 per cent year-on-year to around 320,000 standard containers while the total throughput rose by 26.7 per cent to 5.6 million tonnes, a press release said Wednesday (March 23, 2022).
Hamburg - most important port for Austria
Dominant rail transport
Around 98 per cent of Austrian container volume is transported by rail to and from Hamburg. Well-developed rail routes to Hamburg allow trains to be operated with maximum weight and length making the freight rate per container unbeatably reasonable. In 2021,160 weekly block train services linked Austria with Hamburg. Austria sends mostly wood, paper, beverages, fittings, machinery and equipment to Hamburg while goods sent to Austria include furniture, building materials, sporting goods and bulk goods such as coal and iron ore.
