"We have been pursuing a forward-looking, modern mobility strategy in Hamburg for many years. We want to make transport more convenient, easier, more sustainable and efficient for everyone," said Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. Commerce in Hamburg is eager to experiment with mobility solutions, said Martina Warning, Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce. "Our city should continue to seize this potential and expand its pioneering role in innovative local transport and bring prototypes to roads and railways." Projects should strengthen transport and the economy in the spirit of "Hamburg 2040 - How do we want to live in the future and from what?". Start-ups and scale-ups in Hamburg's mobility sector hold huge potential. Nüwiel, Clean Logistics and Wunder Mobility, for instance, are focusing on new ways of freeing cities of congestion and achieving fast, efficient and sustainable transport.
The Hamburg-based Nüwiel start-up has topped the HEY/Pioneer contest and outdid several global start-ups and scale-ups to win EUR 10,000 in prize-money. The contest was part of the HEY/Hamburg festival on tomorrow's mobility underway at the Chamber of Commerce from June 22-23. All kinds of ideas from flying buses, space-saving micro mobility solutions, cargo bikes and maglev trains were showcased.
Commerce in Hamburg eager to experiment
Finalists: Nüwiel, Breeze Technologies and Luchs Security
Nüwiel, the winner of HEY/Pioneer, was founded in 2016 by Natalia Tomiyama and Fahad Khan to free urban spaces of traffic jams, air pollution, noise and to ease the transport of loads. To this end, the founders have patented an electric bicycle trailer or eTrailer. Heavy loads are delivered safely and efficiently. The runners-ups included another Hanseatic start-up, Breeze Technologies, with its modern air quality sensor technology and Israel's Luchs Security. The cyber security experts hope to integrate a fully automated security platform into the existing development cycle of control units in vehicles. Panelists including Ricarda Rattay, a representative of the Startup Unit Hamburg, Sascha Jacobi, of the Scaleup Landing Pad Hamburg, and Karolin Koecher, of Startup City Hamburg, outlined ways of accessing Hamburg's start-up ecosystem and overviewing the many services and offers of support in the city.
Hamburg as a model of mobility
"HEY/Hamburg has successfully established itself on the market with partners from Germany and abroad," says Dr Hans H. Hamer, Managing Director of HEY/Hamburg. During the festival, experts discussed how to make transport in a city like Hamburg innovative, sustainable and efficient and the maglev train "Transportsystem Bögl". The system is comparable to autonomous transport systems or cable cars and can be set up quickly and cost-effectively. As part of the "Metropolitan Region Mobility" concept, various mobility concepts are being tested in Hamburg on road and rail as well as on water and in the air. Another project is HVV-Switch, which bundles sharing and on-demand services in one app to provide even more public transport. Yet another project, ITS Cube, prioritises buses in road traffic through intelligent technologies. Around 68 per cent of all journeys in Hamburg are now done on public transport, by bicycle or on foot and reflect the progress of the mobility transition.
