"Innovation starts with making. There is now an exciting new space in central Hamburg where everyone can do that. You can experiment, create, and learn something new. We provide the equipment, and users bring their own ideas," said Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and Innovation. Users can also try their hand at coding in the adjacent Robo Lab. The maker lab's operating costs of around EUR 100,000 in 2025 are funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Innovation.
A new maker lab opened on Saturday (May 24, 2025) in Hamburg's Central Library, giving people an opportunity to bring their ideas to life. Those interested can use 3D printers, sewing and embroidery machines, plotters, and laser cutters for their projects. The aim is for people to use this DIY space and equipment independently. Plans are also in place for guided workshops and a repair café.
"Innovation starts with doing"
Maker lab, fab cities and circular economy
The maker lab follows on from the training centre Fab City Lab Hühnerposten and is another part of the Fab City movement, which Hamburg joined in 2019. Apart from teaching digital and analogue manufacturing techniques, emphasis is on sustainable production and using resources responsibly in keeping with a circular economy. Converting the local economy to a comprehensive, digitally supported circular economy by 2054 is now a top priority in Hamburg.
