"The federal and EU funding shows that Hamburg is a key transport hub and is worth the investment," said Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport. The ministry has raised EUR 418 million to expand environment-friendly, digital transport services, Tjarks told Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa). Around EUR 344 million are being spent on expanding the U3 underground line to Horner Geest and building the U5 underground line from Bramfeld to City Nord swiftly. Hamburger Hochbahn and VHH Mobility have received around EUR 98 million to purchase zero-emission buses and boost the decarbonisation of public transport. By developing the HVV-Switch app, the City of Hamburg attracted EUR 30 million for digitalisation measures and increasing the frequency. Another EUR 19.3 million was spent on expanding the bicycle network.
The German government and the EU have allocated more than half a billion euros on expanding and transforming Hamburg's public transport system in the current legislative period. All going according to plan, the funds should ensure the so-called Hamburg Takt or interval becomes reality. Then, residents will be able to access local transport within five minutes.
Hamburg as a model transport region
Intelligent, digital and needs-based transport
"The federal and EU funds are crucial for expanding public transport and should lead to more sustainable transport. They also indicate a clear commitment to transforming mobility and show that our city is an ideal breeding ground for clever, digital and demand-driven transport services," Tjarks said in a LinkedIn post. The senate recently passed its "Digital Mobility Strategy" ranging from driverless shuttles to digital underground and suburban rail systems. Hamburger Hochbahn (HVV) is also overhauling its network and will purchase up to 374 new metro trains for use on the new, fully automated U5 metro line at a cost of up to EUR 2.8 billion. In addition, 29 bus stops and bus lanes for on-demand shuttles with the MOIA ride-sharing company will be added to achieve the interval. Meanwhile, the city is gearing up to host the leading UITP Global Public Transport Summit from June 15-18 this year and in 2027 as well.
