"The approval is a great honour for Hamburg after ITS. This indicates the great international recognition of our mobility strategy," said Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. The city is promoting sustainable mobility through digital rail, autonomous driving and a network of cycle paths. Public transport forms the mainstay of this strategy and will be showcased during the UITP congresses. "Similar to the ITS World Congress 2021, the congresses will give us tailwind for our innovative public transport strategy and lend us yet another argument for investing in transport across Hamburg," he added.
World's leading congress on mobility to put city at centre of mobility transition
Hamburg has secured the nod to host the the UITP Global Public Transport Summits in 2025 and 2027 and prevailed over Vienna, Geneva and Istanbul with a novel urban mobility strategy. The Hanseatic city had submitted an application hinging on the theme of "How do we change mobility for the world to come? – Only together”. The approval comes after the city successfully hosted the ITS World Congress in 2021 marking another milestone towards the mobility transition.
Tailwind for public transport strategy
German government to provide EUR 8 million in funds
Last December, the City of Hamburg and the German government signed a declaration of intent for the "Metropolitan Model Region Mobility" and included the application for the UITP Congress for which the German government has earmarked EUR 8 million in funds. Commenting on the win, Dr Volker Wissing, German Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport, said: "The choice of venue for the world's largest public transport congress confirms Hamburg's pioneering role in innovative mobility solutions." Public transport is pivotal to climate-friendly transport, he pointed out, adding: "We want to use the full potential of the UITP Summits 2025 and 2027 to advance climate protection worldwide with the City of Hamburg."
UITP Congress expected to herald growth
The ITS World Congress attracted urban projects worth EUR 130 million to Hamburg. The city recouped most of its costs thanks to many national and international projects. The UITP Congress is expected to lead to similar economic growth, according to the Ministry of Transport. A consortium consisting of Hamburger Hochbahn AG, Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH and MOIA GmbH had submitted Hamburg's application for UITP backed by the city as well as the Hamburg Convention Bureau and New Mobility Solutions. The novel concept and its emphasis on public inclusion were key to securing the nod, according to Sascha Meyer, CEO of MOIA.
