ITS World Congress Hamburg 2021 to be held under 2G rules

21 September 2021
Only vaccinated or recovered delegates permitted at leading mobility congress

The upcoming ITS World Congress in Hamburg from October 11-15, 2021 will be held under Germany's 2G rules meaning delegates must be fully vaccinated with one of the four EU-approved vaccines (Moderna, Biontech, Johnson & Johnson and Astra Zeneca) or have recovered from COVID-19, organisers said. The City of Hamburg and its partners will present the latest trends in digitalization, mobility and logistics at the congress under the theme  "Experience Future Mobility Now" to make innovative mobility concepts tangible and give a glimpse of developments in future.

2G rule to create world congress atmosphere

"Of course, we are fully aware that a major international congress poses huge challenges for visitors, exhibitors and organizers in the current pandemic," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport. The 2G rules give organizers an opportunity to improve the experience for everyone, he added. Harry Evers, Managing Director of ITS Hamburg 2021 GmbH, noted: "These 2G arrangements will allow delegates to exchange ideas and network more freely and intensely and will conjure up a world congress atmosphere."

Hygiene concept approved

Authorities in Hamburg have approved the 2G hygiene concept subject to amendments. Face masks will be compulsory inside the venues, but can be removed when standing or seated for eating and drinking in clearly marked areas. The hygiene concept should help control access, said Evers, adding: "Proof of access must be checked to ensure that only authorised persons attend the events." Under the 2G option in Hamburg, organizers are responsible for controlling access. Delegates must present proof of vaccination or recovery and with photo ID.

Six fields of action, 42 anchor projects

The Hanseatic city has prepared six fields of action including data and information, intelligent traffic control, guidance and intelligent infrastructure, intelligent parking, mobility as a service, as well as automated and connected driving for the congresss. The city has earmarked 42 out of 200 ITS projects as anchors that are particularly important for achieving its objectives. These so-called anchor projects include the Hamburg Electric Autonomous Transportation (HEAT) autonomous shuttle bus  and the cycle traffic counting network with thermal imaging cameras

Free public day

Doors in the exhibition halls will open for a free public day on October 14, 2021 and at select public spaces with staged events, technical demonstration tours and live demonstrations. Those interested in Public Day can register  on www.itsweltkongress.hamburg. Young people in Hamburg are working on ideas for transport in future as part of a competition underway in schools across the city.
