Cambio car sharing launches in HafenCity

New car sharing concept to drive mobility transition - ITS anchor project

Residents and employees in the HafenCity districts of Baakenhafen and Elbbrücken can soon access a largely electrically-powered fleet of Cambio vehicles in 30 underground car parks as part of a new car sharing model. This is just one of many anchor projects to be showcased during the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress, which Hamburg is hosting from October 11-15, 2021.

Smart mobility in districts

"Cambio's stationary car-sharing service will be a cornerstone of our ITS anchor project "Smart Mobility HafenCity," said Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. The design of urban roads has an immediate impact on the quality of life and "mobility transition and urban development must go hand in hand," he stressed. Residents of Hamburg need convincing and convenient alternatives to their own cars to advance the mobility transition and climate protection. A broad range of car-sharing services would help reduce the number of cars on the roads, provide more space for all road users and still facilitate hires of a suitable car at any time.

Walking, cycling and public transport are begin prioritised to improve the quality and ecology of urban space in HafenCity.  The parking space key has been reduced to 0.4 parking spaces per residential unit in a bid to reduce car ownership substantially. A cross-district, station-based car-sharing system is among the other main aspects of the new model.

Up to 100 Cambio car-sharing vehicles

The Cambio car-sharing concept is aimed at the approximately 8,000 residents and 13,000 employees in eastern HafenCity, but people from outside the district can avail of the service also. After winning the tender, the Cambio Group will start operating a fleet of 13 vehicles at six stations in underground car parks this autumn. This share will rise to 100 vehicles later. At first, 60 per cent of the fleet will consist of electric cars and will increase to 90 per cent by 2025. The vehicles will charged entirely from green electricity.
