HHLA's rail subsidiary Metrans to expand climate neutral routes

HHLA Pure rail network expanded to 340 connections - goal of climate neutrality by 2040

HHLA's rail subsidiary Metrans has added the ports of Gdansk, Rijeka, Rotterdam, Trieste and Wilhemshaven to its certified, carbon-free transport network, a press release said Friday (September 1, 2023). HHLA Pure is adding inland terminals in Duisburg and Indija, Serbia to its network. Metrans has more than doubled its available routes and is now offering around 340 connections thanks to the HHLA Pure network.

Climate-friendly transport to European hinterland

Peter Kiss, CEO of Metrans commented: "The expansion of the HHLA Pure network makes another important contribution to climate protection and offers our customers even more opportunities to transport their containers from the seaports to the hinterland in a certified, climate-neutral way.” Metrans uses state-of-the-art equipment (electric and hybrid locomotives, modern carrying wagons and electric cranes) and electricity from renewable sources in Germany and Austria to keep carbon emissions to a minimum. The remaining CO2 emissions per standard container (TEU) will be calculated for each route and compensated through high-quality climate protection projects.

HHLA aiming for climate neutrality by 2040

All rail transports to and from Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Koper with HHLA Pure have been carbon-free since 2021. The addition of routes was reviewed and certified by TÜV as part of this year’s audit. HHLA offers its customers climate-neutral handling at its container terminals in Hamburg. The TÜV NORD certified the Container Terminal Altenwerder's climate neutrality in August. The entire HHLA Group is aiming for climate neutrality production by 2040 and to reduce offsetting.
