Hamburg Innovation Summit - future with impact

13 September 2024
Conference as catalyst of ideas - Mayor of Hamburg views futuristic aircraft cabin

Innovations don't fall from the sky - not even in sunny weather on the occasion of the Hamburg Innovation Summit (HHIS)last Thursday (September 12, 2024) in Oberhafen. Innovation involves hard work, occurs on the fringes and can be uncomfortable. Creative people come together and challenges are met with ideas and solutions, much like at HHIS. The huge industrial halls in Oberhafen seemed to symbolise the fact that Hamburg is a place of movers and shakers. Up to 1,300 visitors viewed innovative products and projects on the grounds and in the halls.

Problem meets solution

During his tour, Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher took a seat in one of the futuristic-looking aeroplane seats of the Faircraft project sponsored by IFB Hamburg. Textile seats are suspended from ceiling to floor and are no longer anchored to the floor. Recyclable wall brackets have been installed using a click system. All this significantly reduces weight and CO2 emissions. The prototype of this sustainable aircraft cabin is just one example of other impact innovations  that aim to make our world a little bit better. The Social Innovation Corner, for instance, focussed on e.g., the circular economy. Visitors to the Innovation Playground tinkered with the future themselves, testing VR glasses and trying out artificial intelligence and gamification applications.

Idea meets money

Hamburg's "biggest innovation event" took place in a new venue under the motto "Connect. Collaborate. Create". Organised by the Wilkenwerk creative agency, the summit presented all the latest trends and promoted networking between politics, business, science, founders and innovators. Talks and master classes provided inspiring and in-depth technical insights. Companies and initiatives such as HASPA, DESY, ARIC and Future Hamburg presented their services and solutions. Many a potential investor was also spotted in the halls as their money and the foreign currency of courage are need for turning even the best ideas around.

And the winner is ... Hamburg Innovation Awards

The stage near the Startup Area almost had to be closed due to overcrowding. The stands of IFB Hamburg and the Startup Port stand were the scene of many interesting pitches. Highlights of the summit included the presentation of the HHIS awards in three categories. Hivesound’s beekeeping app triumphed in the "Idea" category, while Vilisto came first in the "Start" category for its intelligent heat managements system. Fristam won the award in the "Growth" category for its energy recovery technology. Read more about the winners on our partner website Startup City Hamburg, which also had a stand at HHIS. Founders can avail of their consulting services, which were well booked during the summit. The sky remained blue until the evening. Next year’s HHIS will also be held in Oberhafen.
