Hamburg to celebrate brewing during Beer Week

5 September 2022
Agenda features tours of breweries, tastings, workshops and a boat cruise (September 8-17, 2022)

Beer fans will have even more opportunities to say "prost" or cheers before downing a few pints during the Hamburg Beer Week from September 8-17, 2022. Visitors can look forward to tours of breweries, tastings, food pairings, workshops, a boat cruise and the Collaborations Sud when 22 breweries celebrate beer. Launched in 2020 by the Hamburg-based brewers Jens Hinrichs (Bunthaus Brewery), Udo Spallek (Emilienbier), Brian Schlede (BrewCraft), Daniel Hertrich and Axel Ohm (ÜberQuell Brewery), this year's festival will be held in over 40 different venues.

Tour of port, tastings and Collaborations Sud

Twelve breweries will present their beers during a three-hour tour of the port aboard the MS Commodore on Wednesday (September 8). Breweries, pubs and bars on shore will serve regional and international beers as well as Hamburg Lager. Twenty-two breweries have joined forces to come up with a special, malt-accented beer with a fruity aroma especially for the festival. The smoked malt and old traditional barley pay tribute to Hamburg's long history of brewing which dates back over 1,000 years. The city was once considered the "'Brewery of the Hanseatic League".

Finale in Ballinstadt

Fans will also have an opportunity to handle hops and malt during the Hamburg Hobby Brewing Championships on September 16, 2022. Emphasis is on red beer, which was originally brewed mainly for seafarers. However, as only a few recipes still exist, hobby brewers are likely to come up with boundless new variations. More than 25 breweries from all over Germany and Europe will present over 100 draught beers in and outside the Ballinstadt Emigration Museum during the grand finale. Entertainment will be provided by live music and several DJs, a street art battle featuring six artists, workshops with brewers, journalists and experts. The close marks the start of the museum's  "BIER - Exportschlager" exhibition on emigration and the German art of brewing, which lasts until late December.
