Gamecity Hamburg's latest funding scheme has been in place since 2020. "In the four funding rounds since then, we have put more than EUR 1,120,000 towards 21 Hamburg-based games. We are pleased that many of the funded projects have won over investors or publishers with strong prototypes and secure follow-up financing," said Dennis Schoubye, Head of Gamecity Hamburg. A jury of experts decides on the recipients in a bid to boost the diversity and quality of computer games developed in Hamburg.
Founders, start-ups, and SME now have until the deadline of April 5, 2023 to apply for up to EUR 120,000 in prototype funding for digital games, a press release said (March 3, 2023). The scheme allows Gamecity Hamburg to make EUR 400,000 available for game developers on behalf of the City of Hamburg this year.

Developers or SMEs and those who intend opening a branch office in the city are eligible. The funding covers 80 per cent of the costs of prototype development. If no cumulation with another public funding scheme such as federal computer games funding or EU funds is sought, a maximum of EUR 80,000 is available. If the applicant wishes to combine the funds with other financing schemes, up to EUR 120,000 is available from Gamecity Hamburg. Applicants must pay at least 20 per cent of the costs themselves in the event of cumulation. Five teams can avail of funds and expertise for their digital game concepts in the annual Games Lift Incubator. The application phase for the Games Lift Incubator begins in the second quarter of 2023.
