TUHH scoops Hamburg 2040 Award - three deciding factors

The Hamburg University of Technology has won the Hamburg 2040 Award presented by  the Chamber of Commerce, a press release said Thursday (July 3, 2025). The award honours institutions and individuals who are committed to implementing the "Hamburg 2040: How do we want to live in the future — and how will we get there?" strategy.

Three deciding factors

The TUHH's strong international profile and its commitment to startups, knowledge transfer and sustainability were the deciding factors, according to the Chamber of Commerce. "Its cutting edge research, great startup dynamics and exemplary knowledge transfer between science and business show impressively how academic knowledge can lead to innovation, jobs and sustainable growth," said  Norbert Aust, President of the Chamber of Commerce in Hamburg.

Excellent teaching and practical implementation

Many startups such as Traceless, Lignopure, Infinite Roots  and Colipi have emerged from TUHH  in recent years. The Hamburg 2040 Award honours teaching at the university and its "successful practical implementation", said Andreas Timm-Giel,  President of TUHH. In 2024 alone, its spin-offs raised over EUR 150 million in venture capital. TUHH joined the Cluster of Excellence earlier this year, further evidence of the university's national and international importance, said Aust. TUHH also plays a key role in urban development, particularly in southern Hamburg, and contributes to urban and industrial development in Harburg and the port.
