The "Cabin Technologies" category honors innovations in systems, components and materials The finalists in this category include Diehl Aviation, which aims to revolutionise cabin interiors using "eDecor" or customisable, energy-efficient decor. Lufthansa Technik’s “Hidden TouchDisplay” is a customisable touch panel that integrates seamlessly into any cabin. Airbus' "A220 Airspace Cabin" extends this cabin concept to even its smallest airline with XL overhead stowage bins, lighting designs and improved power supply for passengers' devices.
The Hamburg Aviation Cluster has selected 22 finalists for this year's Crystal Cabin Award (CCA) to be presented on April 8, 2025, during the global Aircraft Interiors Expo underway until April 10. The finalists were selected from airlines, suppliers, manufacturers and design companies all over the world. CCA honours ideas for more travel comfort, efficiency and sustainability in seven categories: Cabin Technologies, Passenger Comfort, IFEC & Digital Services, Sustainable Cabin and University and the new categories of Accessibility and Judges' Choice: Airline Innovation.
Cabin technologies and passenger comfort
IFEC, digital services and sustainable cabins
Seamless connectivity and the delivery of personalised content are now critical to quality of service. The finalists in the "In-Flight Entertainment & Connectivity (IFEC) and Digital Services" category i.e., Lufthansa Technik, Satcom Direct and IDAIR have developed the "Triple Innovation For A Five Star Cabin Experience" for passengers aboard a Boeing 737. This system maximises efficiency and VIP experience in the cabin. Safran Cabins has submitted its "Safran Connected Interiors" system that autonmously captures and transfers operational data across cabin equipment to provide a fully digitalized, retrofit-ready maintenance solution. The finalists also include concepts for a sustainable cabin that reduces emissions, minimises waste and introduces circularity. Boeing, Adient Aerospace, Botany Weaving and Lanza Tech have teamed up to submit "From Waste Carbon to Cabin Comfort: Bringing Circularity to Aircraft Textiles". Carbon absorption technology converts CO2 emissions into sustainable fabrics for aircraft interiors. Circularity is another priority as exemplified by Diehl Aviation's "Eco bin". Hailed as the world's first fully recyclable overhead bin, it features a special recyclable sandwich material and reduces the environmental impact by saving weight and CO2 emissions.
Two new categories
The new "Judges Choice: Airline Innovation" category honours an airline's efforts to develop the passenger experience ecosystem. The finalists in this catergory are Air France, Air India, Cathay Pacific and United Airlines. Accessibility is an increasing focus in aviation as reflected by the introduction of the same-named category. Collins Aerospace’s entry, “Prime+”, is a cabin platform system that enables wheelchair users to fly while seated in their wheelchairs and does not require them to move to an airline seat. The "Single Aisle Lavatory Door 1 - Accessibility for all" system, developed by the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) with Diehl Aviation in the "University" category, makes toilets in single-aisle aircraft more accessible for passengers with limited mobility.
