Don't miss this summer's cultural events in Hamburg

20 August 2025
Festivals, theatre and art in August all over Hamburg

Summer is synonymous with cultural buzz for most people in Hamburg. This summer, the city is hosting multifaceted events to suit all tastes and weather conditions.

Quiet sounds, loud beats

Launched during the pandemic, concerts, live podcasts, readings and stand-up comedy will be held in Planten un Blomen park almost daily until August 29, 2025 in the music pavilion. Guests include Erobique, Max Prosa and the Michalskis.

All kinds of musicians will perform in the Elbphilharmonie's Grand Hall during the Elbphilharmonie Summer from August 15-31, 2025. Classical symphony orchestras will perform pieces such as Mozart's The Magic Flute, while the Elbphilharmonie's Jazz Academy and artists such as Seun Kuti and Noname will present a unique mix of jazz, Afrobeats and hip-hop sounds.

The first ever Hamburg Jazz Prize will be presented during the 30th Jazz Open on August 30-31, 2025. The two-day festival in Planten un Blomen will feature performances by the NDR Big Band as well as blues and electronic acts.

Festivals for diversity

Music is at the heart of the International Summer Festival at Kampnagel. The agenda also features around 50 theatre, dance, music events as well as art exhibitions and movies under the theme of "Room to Dream" until August 24, 2025. There will be plenty  to see and hear throughout the city and on  Kampnagel's premises.

The Große Bergstraße in Altona will become the backdrop for the Africa Festival from August 22-24, 2025. The music of Burkina Faso in West Africa will take centre stage and will feature  four bands. The food, talks and dancing will all celebrate Black culture and young Black  entrepreneurs will peddle their wares in the Albarica market.

Visit a museum for a change

Why not take a dip in a museum instead of a swimming pool? The latest exhibition in the International Maritime Museum Hamburg showcases women in marine research until the end of 2025. Meanwhile, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe will focus on fashion this summer. Driven by consumption issues, the circular economy and the limits of the fashion industry, it is showcasing the work of the Parisian label XULY.Bët, which uses recycled materials and striking colours and prints.
