“The Altona Innovation Park is part of our vision to turn Hamburg into an internationally attractive hub of innovation that brings established companies together with ambitious startups. Following the successful launch of tecHHub Hamburg, we are now delighted to celebrate the next milestone in our success story with the laying of the foundation stone for the neighbouring DESY Innovation Factory,” said Rolf Strittmatter, Managing Director of Hamburg Invest. Construction of the first DESY Innovation Factory building on the DESY campus began in November 2024. The second building will create a twin structure that will closely link research and industry.
The foundation stone for the construction of the DESY Innovation Factory in the Altona Innovation Park was laid Thursday (March 27, 2025) marking a milestone for Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. From 2027, startups and young companies in photonics, sensor technology, electronics and quantum computing will be able to access 3,000 square metres of infrastructure and office space. The DESY Innovation Factory will establish an "innovation ecosystem that is unique in Germany", linking research and industry. The ceremony was attended by Katharina Fegebank, Deputy Mayor of Hamburg and Senator for Science, Research and Equality, Melanie Leonhard, Senator for Economics and Innovation, and other honorary guests.

DESY Innovation Factory - close collaboration between companies and science
"We need companies and science to work closely together so that innovations can have a concrete impact," said Leonhard. The DESY Innovation Factory in the centre of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld offers exactly that: "The factory will turn Hamburg into a hotspot of forward-looking technologies and strengthen Germany as an important centre of innovation in the world," she added. The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) is one of the world's leading particle accelerator centres and researches the structure and function of matter. The DESY Innovation Factory is funded by the German government and the City of Hamburg. The aim is to boost deep-tech innovations that are particularly promising for the future of society.
