Strong growth in shipbuilding

The biggest jump was in shipbuilding with an increase of 61.8 points. Most  or 81 per cent of the companies surveyed rated the current business situation as satisfactory. The business climate index in the port industry also rose by nine points with a similarly high level of satisfaction (93.7 per cent) presently. The index rose by 36 points in the shipping industry, with more than 75 per cent of the companies surveyed expecting the business situation to improve or at least remain the same.

Challenges remain despite the upturn. The shipbuilding industry is struggling with a shortage of skilled labour  (94.4 per cent), uncertain economic policies (81.3 per cent), rising labour costs (72.9 per cent) and energy and raw material prices (42.4 per cent). The results were similar in the shipping and port industry.

Demand for annual port load equalisation

"The business sector and the states in the north are calling for an increase in the annual equalization of port levies to at least EUR 400 million," said Bernhard Brons, Chair of IHK Nord. "We need appropriate, long term funding given the importance of the ports for the German economy as global trade hubs and for achieving the energy transition."
