Hospital expanding digitally-enabled healthcare with AI language model

The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) is now using artificial intelligence to write doctor's letters, a press release said Tuesday (August 20, 2024) . The AI language model "ARGO" should boost patient care and ease the everyday burden on staff. The technology was developed by UKE’s newly founded non-profit "Innovative Digital Medicine" (IDM).

Huge potential of AI for medicine

"The course of the patient's disease is mapped thoroughly and individually and combined with clinical knowledge," said Dr. Nils Schweingruber, Managing Director of IDM. ARGO represents added value for patients and medical staff, as a wide range of tasks can be integrated with the technology.

Expanded digital support services

The AI language model is based on UKE's digital patient file, which was set up in 2009. It now contains seven million cases making it one of the largest German-language multidimensional collections of medical records. UKE continues to expand its digitally-enabled services. "The  advanced level of digitalisation in our care is a valuable basis for developing new, innovative solutions for sustainable medicine," said Prof. Dr Christian Gerloff, Medical Director and Chairman of the Executive Board of the UKE.
