UKE and Helios Endo-Klinik to merge orthopaedics in Hamburg

Hospitals to pool expertise in research, teaching and patient care from April 2025

The University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and the Helios Endo-Klinik Hamburg, which specialisies in bone, joint and spinal surgery, are to merge from April 1, 2025 in a bid to intensify research, teaching and patient care. Then, the only orthopaedic clinic in north Germany will offer the entire spectrum of orthopaedics from outpatient diagnostics to inpatient treatment and rehabilitation, a press release said Friday (November 8, 2024).

Flagship in orthopaedics

"The collaboration between university medicine and the specialised clinic, the UKE and Helios are making progress in implementing the core of the hospital reform. Our collaboration in the field of orthopaedics will create a unique medical beacon in Germany with international appeal," said  Robert Möller, a member of the Management Board of Fresenius and CEO of Helios Endo-Klinik. The merger will provide around 250 beds in future. Patients will benefit from a higher level of care and individualised treatment as well as access to modern research.

Strengthening Hamburg as a healthcare centre

UKE and Helios are striving for a holistic approach that includes inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitative services. Patients, students and trainee doctors will benefit from the combined expertise of both institutions. "The future cooperation between UKE and the Helios Endo-Klinik will strengthen research, medical training and patient care far beyond Hamburg's borders," said  Katharina Fegebank, Senator for Science, Research and Equality.  The merger should make Hamburg an even more attractive entre of healthcare that provides the best possible care for patients in north Germany, according to Melanie Schlotzhauer, Senator for Social Affair Welfare.
