Germany's Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) insurer is putting EUR 2.36 towards improved work conditions at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) through 2027. In 2019, TK funded several projects to attract and retain UKE's employees. The latest funds bring the total amount of funding to EUR 6.13 million.

Improving health of staff

To this end, TK is helping UKE to launch new projects. Maren Puttfarcken, Head of TK  in Hamburg, said: "In view of the shortage of skilled labourers new ideas are needed in occupational health management."  These include measures to boost the health of nursing staff, to identify and reduce time-consuming work and special offers for more generational diversity.

Approaches to optimising working conditions

The UKE has launched five initiatives since the start of the funding scheme. These include the Work 5.0 project, which won the German Demography Prize 2024 for making working hours more flexible and improving interdisciplinary collaboration. Other comnpleted projects include "Diagnose Inside", an analysis tool for identifying stressors, and "AZUBI - Ausbildung mit Zukunft bieten", which identifies stress in nursing training.
