Classical music stars to perform during “love”-themed International Music Festival in Hamburg (April 28-June 7, 2023)

Classical music virtuosos including Cecilia Bartoli, Rolando Villazón and Lang Lang are among the star-studded line-up for the Elbphilharmonie's International Music Festival underway from April 28 to June 7, 2023. The "love"-themed festival also features performances by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, the Ensemble Resonanz and the Symphoniker Hamburg. Chansons will also be staged on April 29, 2023 and the spotlight will shine on a new music theatre project with Thalia Theater.

Modern interpretations and new works

The opening concert on April 28 will present a new work entitled "On a Clear Day" by the American Sean Shepherd, based on texts by the lyricist Ulla Hahn with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano. Music by Alfred Schnittke, a Russian-German composer who moved to Hamburg after the collapse of the Soviet Union, will be performed in the Elbphilharmonie's Grand Hall on May 21, 2023, featuring the "Seid nüchtern und Wachtet" (Faust Cantata) with the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Tanja Ariane Baumgartner as Mephisto.

Music festival and historic couples

The festival, which is sponsored by the Elbphilharmonie Foundation and the Förderkreis Internationales Musikfest Hamburg, ties in with dramatic couples. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Jakub Hrůša, will perform excerpts from Prokofiev's Shakespeare ballet "Romeo and Juliet" on May 13, 2023 in the Grand Hall. This will be followed days later by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra's performance of Schönberg's "Pelléas and Mélisande" on May 19. A week later, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, conducted by Alan Gilbert, and the NDR Vocal Ensemble will perform Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" on May 26 and 28. The last concert in the "Love est. 2023" project by a community in Hamburg will be held on May 14, 2023. Emphasis is on the many facets of love in our time. More information about tickets and concerts can be found on the Elbphilharmonie's website.
