Destinations like Hamburg rely on guests to regain confidence in travel and thus in a safe, rewarding stay. The campaign aims to position Hamburg effectively amid growing competition and to generate visitor numbers. Retail, restaurants and hotels as well as leisure and cultural facilities are to be included in the campaign.
Guest numbers in Hamburg fell by 55 per cent in the first half of 2020 over the same period in 2019 given the fierce blow dealt by the corona pandemic to global tourism. The senate is now backing a long-term campaign called "That's why. Hamburg" devised by Hamburg Tourismus GmbH to revive tourism, which is crucial to Hamburg's economy. The campaign reflects the requirements of the industry and takes account of conditions in the corona era at the same time.
Higher visitor numbers and greater competitiveness
Powerful signal in difficult times
Michael Otremba, Managing Director of Hamburg Tourismus GmbH, said: "The senate recently stressed the importance of tourism for Hamburg through its extensive measures. The approval of funds for a tourism campaign is another strong signal to the entire industry in difficult times. This allows us to lend the ongoing 'That's why. Hamburg' campaign far more clout to stimulate demand." Around EUR 2 million have been made available for the campaign by Hamburg Tourism and the Ministry of Economics.
